ELMHURST – The majority of chronic medical conditions are lifestyle related and, thus, preventable. Heart disease, cancer, stroke, diabetes and others account for 70 percent of all diseases. But even these daunting ailments can be controlled if they are detected early enough.

"Obviously, avoiding a disease is better than treating one," said Jeff D'Amico, D.O., a physician on the Elmhurst Memorial Hospital Medical Staff. "But since you can't completely avoid all diseases, the next best thing is addressing problems in their early stages, whey they are typically easier to treat and you have a better chance of success."

Preventive screenings are a powerful tool in the management and early detection of diseases. Their success is rooted in the basic principle that the more that is known about health, the more opportunities there are to continue doing something right or start working on what needs to be improved upon."
