ELMHURST — Over the past year, Patrick McDonald has noticed an increase in the number of people coming to the Pink Elephant Resale Shop. The store's manager noted that not only are more people shopping at the resale shop during the poor economy, but more people are also donating items, such as clothing, furniture and household goods.
"Our regulars have been stopping by more often and new customers have been steadily coming in," McDonald said. "More than anything, people are looking for clothing, but furniture and other household items, such as linens, throw pillows and dish sets are being sought."
The trend is not unique to Elmhurst. Recently, the National Association of Resale & Thrift Shops reported that nearly 78 percent of shops surveyed saw an increase in the number of new customers during the second quarter of 2009. In addition, 62 percent of respondents experienced an increase in the volume of inventory, with approximately one-third reporting an increased volume of more than 20 percent.
Located at 121 W. First Street in Elmhurst, all proceeds from purchases at the Pink Elephant go to enhance the programs and services offered by Elmhurst Memorial Hospital. "There seems to be more awareness of helping others in these difficult times," McDonald said. "The donations we receive not only benefit the community by supporting the Hospital, but they also ensure our customers can find reasonably priced merchandise here at the shop."
Members of the community will have an opportunity to see what the Pink Elephant Resale Shop has to offer during a fashion show on Sept. 12. Beginning at noon at the shop, volunteers will be modeling clothing items available. Refreshments will be served and there will be a 20 percent discount on all purchases (excluding consignment items) throughout the day.
