ELMHURST – Preparing for the birth of a child is an exciting time. It can also be a stressful experience full of questions and last-minute preparations. For parents-to-be who want to learn all they can about what to expect but cannot find the time, Elmhurst Memorial Hospital (EMH) now has the solution.
EMH recently became one of the first hospitals in the state to offer an eLearning Childbirth Education program that provides a convenient alternative alternative to expecting parents who cannot attend a conventional class due to bed rest, scheduling conflicts or time constraints. It also serves as a useful refresher course for parents preparing for the birth of another child.
"Many new mothers tell us that being educated in the childbirth process helped them feel more empowered during their labor experience," said Debbie Schwass, R.N., perinatal education coordinator at EMH's Family Birthing Center. "Many new parents also say that preparing for the birth of a child can be overwhelming. Online childbirth education can be a convenient alternative for those who find it hard to fit in a series of classes."
EMH's web-based program uses animated illustrations, videos, voice-overs and interactive activities to guide users through the basics of childbirth, breastfeeding and caring for a newborn. After registering, participants will receive a program manual and code to access the class. They will then have 90 days to complete the information at their own pace, when it's convenient for them.
"Participants can rest comfortably knowing they will receive complete education in a personalized format from the comfort of their own home," Schwass said. "They can also take comfort in knowing they are not alone. If participants have any questions about the content, one of our perinatal educators will be available to help."
