Construction progresses despite weather

This winter is lining up to be one of the snowiest on record, and with temperatures dropping below marks not seen for a decade, the weather is having an effect on the construction process.

Before the recent cold spells and snowfalls hit, foundations for the new Hospital were completed on time and steel began rising on Nov. 10, 2008, as scheduled. In addition, the majority of the underground utilities were installed and approximately 60 percent of the parking lots were paved.

As the temperature drops below 20 degrees, construction activities become difficult, and once temperatures drop below zero, all work becomes hazardous.

To combat the weather, construction crews are now actively enclosing the partially erected steel building frame with tarps and heating the work spaces. The permanent gas main to the new Hospital building has been installed and there are enough heaters on the site to generate 20,500,000 BTUs of heat. This allows the placement of concrete on the elevated steel decks to continue, as well as ensures that spray fireproofing and framing of exterior and interior walls can start in early February.
