Going Home Day of Surgery Instructions

Two weeks before surgery

  • Stop taking any herbal medications. Some examples include Gingko Biloba, Ecchinacea and St. John’s Wort.

One week before surgery

  • Stop taking any aspirin, Ibuprofen or Naproxyn products (Tylenol/Acetominophen is OK).
  • Arrange for an adult to drive you home after surgery. (A taxi may be used ONLY if you are accompanied by a responsible adult.)
  • Plan to have a responsible adult stay with you for 24 hours after the surgery.

The day before surgery

  • Do not drink any alcohol or use marijuana, etc.
  • If you are ill, contact your surgeon.
  • Call the Ambulatory Surgery Unit at 630-993-5106 between 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to confirm your time to come to the Hospital. (If your surgery is on Monday, please call the Saturday before between 9 a.m. and Noon.)
  • Do not eat or drink anything after midnight.

The day of surgery

  • DO bathe or shower and brush your teeth (without swallowing water). You may use deodorant.
  • DO wear loose, comfortable clothing; it will be placed in a locker during your procedure.
  • DO take your morning medications,if the nurse or your physician instructed you to do so.
  • DO bring reading glasses, if needed, and containers for contact lenses or glasses.
  • DO NOT wear any eye make up or jewelry.
  • DO NOT chew gum, take cough drops, or consume hard candy or mints.
  • DO NOT bring any jewelry or valuables, including cellular phones.

Two adults can be with you in the room in Ambulatory Surgery; no children under 12.

Before surgery, an anesthesiologist will speak with you.

After surgery, your surgeon will talk to your family member/companion.

At home after surgery

Follow the instructions that will be sent home with you. A nurse will call you in the next day or two to check on your condition; please make sure we have your correct phone number.
