Clinical Trials

Participating in clinical trials can be an excellent option for oncology patients. Although some people may think of clinical trials as a last resort, many studies are geared toward first-line treatment. In fact, all cancer drugs have been tested in this way. The vast majority of studies Elmhurst Memorial Hospital offers are Phase III clinical trials that compare the safety and effectiveness of the new treatment against the current standard treatment. Participation in research offers the possibility of improving quality of life and symptom management for you and others by providing key information needed to develop new standards of care.

Elmhurst Memorial Hospital is able to provide clinical trials sponsored by a National Cancer Institute-supported cooperative group through an affiliation with the Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center of Northwestern University. The American College of Surgeons has approved Elmhurst Memorial Hospital as a Comprehensive Community Cancer Program. One important facet of this approval is our ability to offer clinical trials to many of our oncology patients. Elmhurst Memorial Hospital is a member of the Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group.

A designated nurse is available to assist all subjects through every step from informed consent, to treatment, to follow-up appointments.

The potential benefits from enrolling in a clinical trial can include:

  • More treatment options
  • Helping others with the same condition by contributing to cancer research
  • Having access to treatment that is not otherwise available, which might be safer or more effective than current treatment options
  • Feeling you have more control over your situation and are taking a more active role in your health care

By their nature, clinical trials involve risk as well as benefit and may not be right for everyone. Please contact Dr. Gerald Kozuh at 630-690-6765, Dr. Amaryllis Gil at 630-758-5460, Dr. Robert Eisner at 630-652-4290 or Jaime Rohde, RN, Research Coordinator at 630-758-5460 for more details.
